How to Get More Fiber in Your Diet

By Vito La Fata

If you are interested in being as healthy as you can be, you should know about the importance of getting plenty of fiber in your diet. It can be an embarrassing topic to discuss, but it is so crucial to talk about. Fiber comes from plants and it is very hard to digest it. That is partly why it is so good for your health.

After you eat a meal, your body begins pulling the nutrients from the food you eat. What is leftover is then discharged from your body as waste. This waste has toxic products in it. The way to make this waste exit your body is to eat more fiber. If you do not get enough fiber, the waste will sit in your digestive tract for a long time.

And the longer it sits there, the more toxins are reabsorbed into your bloodstream. These toxins can make you sick and even cause cancer. On the other hand, eating enough fiber can help you lose weight, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The good news is that there is an easy fix: eat more fiber. If you are a female, try to eat 25 grams each day. If you are a male, shoot for about 38 grams each day. And remember: fiber only comes from plants. So be sure to eat plenty of veggies, fruits, beans and whole grains.

There are easy ways to get more fiber into your diet. For instance, read the labels on food before you eat it. The grams of fiber are usually listed. Also, eat the skins of fruits and vegetables. The skins usually have a lot of fiber in them.

Also, when you eat breads and other grains, be careful to eat only 100% whole grain products. Unless it says this on the package, you may not be getting whole grain. Grains that have been refined are not as good for you as whole grain.
