The Fundamentals Of Ozark Gymnastics

By Grace Daniels

In Ozark gymnastics is a form of sport that entails performance of exercises that require flexibility, balance, coordination, agility, power, courage and physical strength. The term gymnastics has its origin from the Greek word gymnos which translates to naked and gymnazo meaning to train naked. There are many other Greek words related to the two but have related meaning too. The exercise was referred to by that term because during the ancient time, people exercised while naked.

Internationally, this exercise is regulated and coordinated by some international body. Every nation has a nationwide governing body that has some affiliation to the global body. People who perform these exercises are called gymnasts. The discipline has several branches and gymnasts have the freedom to specialize in whichever division they want. The main branches are team gym, trampolining, artistic, tumbling, acrobatic, aerobic, and rhythmic gymnastics.

Competitors in the competitive version of this sport can be of varied ages starting from 20 months old. Other age groups and categories include children, competitive, world class, and recreational exercise. The level of skills among the participants varies with each category. Events are classified into those for women, kids and men.

Major women events consist of balance beam, uneven bars, vault, and floor exercise. Men activities include floor exercise, high bar, vault, pommel horse, still rings, and parallel bars. The exercises last a short while but are highly exhausting requiring strength, endurance, and flexibility. These activities evolved from circus performance skills and activities carried out by ancient Greeks. Greek activities included skills applied in dismounting and mounting horses.

Scoring in both women and men events is found from deductions taken from the start values. The start values are calculated basing on levels of difficulty of various elements gymnasts try out and whether they meet the composition requirements or not. Composition requirement varies with the type of event one tries out. This value is known as D score.

Deductions in executions and artistry are subtracted from a value of 10.0. In this case, the value 10.0 is called an E score. The final scores are got by adding together deductions from E scores to D scores. Since 2007, there have been changes in the methods used to calculate final scores. Since then, bonuses are added to executions when calculating the final scores.

In various kinds of tumbling or aerial routines, landing makes the final stage. Landing follows flight and take off. Landing is an important skill in relation to executions in competition scores, injury occurrence, and general performance. If one applies less energy, the probability of sustaining severe injuries increases. Injuries primarily occur within the lower extremities. The main injuries include cartilage lesions, ligament tears, and bone fractures and/or bruises. Gymnasts should use proper skills and techniques to score highly and avoid injuries.

The final contact on the ground must be made safely, gracefully, and properly in a double-foot landing style. Successful landing is termed as soft. This occurs when the hip joint and the knee of both feet are at an angle of flexion of over 63 degrees. When one wants to learn the best styles of this practice, Ozark gymnastics presents the best option to give first consideration.
