What To Know About A Blood Warmer

By Michael Obrien

Blood warmer is the name of a medical device. This unit may also be referred to as an IV fluid warmer. This tool is often used at hospitals and other medical facilities as a way to warm the blood and fluids that go into an IV, before administering them to a patient, usually intravenously.

This is also done to fluids given via alternative parenteral routes. The purpose of this is to maintain body temperature levels, which is especially important in preventing the onset of hypothermia, especially in patients who are undergoing surgery or physically traumatized. Hypothermia is a medical condition that occurs when the core temperature of a body drops below what is required for normal bodily functions and metabolism, which is usually 35 degrees on the celsius scale.

There are different features of this type of equipment that may differ depending on the specific device that is employed. These are generally used as a warmer for IV fluids, as well as blood. Most are disposable, have battery backup, are lightweight and portable, and can be in full operation in less than a minute. They accept all of the standard infusion sets, attaching between the infusion bag and its site. Their heater auto adjusts to the flow rate.

Devices employed today have undergone many changes because of the advances in technology. Disposable warmers are used frequently in the modern day. An example of these models is the Thermiflow fluid warmer. The device is a disposable, self-powered devices that activates itself when exposed to the atmosphere. It also accepts all IV Sets. This particular model is known to utilize a flow rate of approximately 40 ml for every minute and increases the temperature of fluids by 10 degrees celsius.

Blood that has been donated is stored in a cool place for preservation purposes. People who require transfusions must first have this fluid warmed through this device so that their body will readily accept it. Many issues can arise when the process is not done correctly. Sometimes, other preparation procedures are required before the fluid can be administered.

All animals, even human beings, require the bodily fluid known as blood. This fluid is so important because it is what is used to deliver all the nutrients, substances and oxygen that the various body parts require to proper function. It is also responsible for transporting metabolic waste.

IV therapy is employed to infuse certain liquids into the veins, directly. These can be used to add in a variety of fluids. Of course, all that is administered in this therapy has to be preserved at a cold temperature in order to stay in good condition for injection. Therefore, warming units are needed to heat the fluids to a level compatible with the body temperature of a patient.

Blood warmer is the name of a device that is used in medical settings as a way to warm liquids that are to be administered directly into the body. This warming process is important because many of the fluids that are collected and stored are usually kept in cold temperatures to help with preservation. This temperatures do not match the temperature of the body and can be harmful to people if they are not properly warmed prior to administration.
