Fitness means much more than working out at a gym. To see the best results and reach your fitness goals, you need to combine a good understanding of fitness with the strength and willpower to persevere. You'll find below some key tips to starting your fitness routine and making it last.

Stay motivated by setting personal fitness goals. When you have a goal in mind, you tend to concentrate on getting past difficulties instead of letting them hamper your progress. By doing different activities when exercising, a person will be able to receive maximum value for their effort. A person who usually uses a treadmill for exercise purposes can go for a run through the neighborhood. There will always be different results achieved between running up hills on a sidewalk and the treadmill. The body can only keep on improving when it is constantly challenged with new and different routines.

Don't lift weights for more than one hour. Muscle wasting also becomes a problem if you exercise for more than an hour. Once 60 minutes has passed, put the weights down and give your body a break.

To help remain motivated try different fitness classes. Switching things around allow you to discover new classes you love, so you have a reason to continue going to the gym. Try out a dance or pilates class. Even a kickboxing workout or boot camp would do. Keep in mind that you only need try each type of class one time, and you will lose weight while you are doing it.

Running outside far surpasses the workout you get on a treadmill. Treadmills offer convenience, especially when it gets too cold outside. Running on the sidewalk, however, is more effective.

Always wear the proper shoes when performing any exercise routine. Wearing inappropriate shoes can cause injury. Use running shoes for running, squash shoes for squash and dancing shoes for dancing. Not to mention, your feet will become uncomfortable more quickly and can lead to discouragement during your workouts and a higher chance of leaving the gym early.

People who are primarily interested in losing weight sometimes exercise far too hard because they're hoping to burn the maximum possible number of calories. The problem with this is that you can quickly push yourself to a dangerous level of exhaustion, which can lead to other health problems. Additionally, it is bad for your body to push the limits in any way.

Dieting is hard to maintain if you can't see any results. Instead of weighing yourself, gather up some clothes that are a little tight for you. See how tight those clothes are at the end of each week to determine your progress.

Carefully examine any workout bench that you are considering before you buy. Press a finger into the bench's seat to figure out what its padding is made out of. You should feel nothing but padding. If you feel anything hard like metal or some other material, choose another bench to work out on.
